Firefox and Bamboo

The Firefox browser was first released in 2004. It grew out of the Mozilla project – an open source project – that eventually required a browser to accompany all the applications being developed. At first updates and new versions of the Firefox browser were infrequent, but over time the new versions were rolled out faster and faster. Now it is predicted that there will be an update of the popular browser every 6 weeks.

For many the Firefox browser is much better than Internet Explorer. It is open source and free. It shows websites both old and new in a lot more accurate fashion than IE. It also incorporates security features to stop viruses attacking your computer.

I recently bought an ASUS Bamboo Laptop. To be precise the ASUS U43JC-X1. It has a 14 inch screen, a 4 GB ram and a 500 GB hard drive. It also has an incredible 10 hour battery life. What is best about my bamboo laptop is that the casing is made from bamboo. This cuts down on the use of plastics by 15%. It is thus not only a stylish looking computer but also an environmentally friendly computer.

And naturally when I’m surfing the web on my bamboo computer I am using Firefox. I consider both Firefox and the bamboo laptop to be two of the finest things to come out of the computer age that we live in.

New Websites Helping Us to Eat Smarter

Browsing around the internet there are a host of websites (and even apps) available that help us to know what we’re eating. As an example, the CRON-O-Meter site is gaining traction and has a number of new fans. In essence, the website, also available as an iPad app lets us type in the food we eat and quantity (number or weight) and then it provides a nutritional and calorific breakdown of our diet.

It’s much easier when you’re eating simple foods because that way there’s much less data entry on our part. It would be pretty tricky trying to add in all the ingredients if you bake a cake, for instance.

So you can probably see that this app is mainly used by people who’re already fairly health conscious. We can use it to find out more about the food that we eat. In conjunction with some digital kitchen scales, a blender and a juicer under $100, we can work out exactly what we are putting into our bodies.

This is useful for weight loss as well as being a great indicator if we are sticking to our “diet”. Are we eating too many fats? Is our vitamin and mineral intake high enough. The new apps, like CRON-O-Meter make it easier for us to track our dietary progress.

Protect your Information on Holiday

While on holiday in Koh Samui last year I had something unfortunate happen to me. I went to an internet cafe in Bang Rak on the north coast of the island to check my email and do some other catching up. The computer I used was a very old PC. I think it had a very early version of internet explorer installed because several of the sites I visited looked odd on the screen.

I logged into a number of my accounts, did some further browsing and then had a look at Facebook. Nothing special at the time. However, when I got home and logged into my email I noticed that my inbox was flooded with spammy messages. Worse still my Facebook account had been hijacked and several bogus invites had been sent out under my name. I had been badly hacked, and my personal information jeopardized. It took me a good few hours to change passwords etc.

Looking back on it, I’m sure it was my hour in an internet cafe in Bang Rak that had been the cause of the problem.

Since then I never login to my accounts on personal computers. Instead I travel with my own small laptop. This is getting much easier because wifi connections are available in more and more places. Now in Thailand most mid-range hotels and resorts have wifi. It is the best solution since you can control the security on your own computer but not on public computers.

Smart Use of Today’s Technology

Lets face it there are a lot of people who do not use technology smartly. Half the time people do not know what their computers, TVs, or cell phones are capable of. Is this their fault or the companies for not showing them how to use all the features they have.

Our company has tried to get more technical and started to allow our drivers to update their  traffic accident claims online from our website. We thought this would make the whole process easier and less confusing for them while getting rid of some unneeded paper work.  Boy, were we wrong.

Because they lacked the technical knowledge on how to work the computers and navigate the website it took them far longer to update the site than it would for us just to take their phone calls. Unbelievably it took hands on one on one training to get everyone up to date on this new technology.

How the Many Ways for All-Star Voting Tamper the Game

Call me a homer here, but I think you would find it hard to not see how Luol Deng should be an All-Star this year. He is one of the most consistent players in the league, and definitely seems to be the Chicago Bulls second best player. But the All-Star voting returns show that he is behind LeBron, Chris Bosh, the ailing and aging Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and even his own teammate in Carlos Boozer.

The fan voting can be done in many ways, from logging on to the website or onto a mobile app to texting the player’s names. But you are able to vote once a day, meaning you can vote for the same guys each day. The fans of the game do not recognize anything outside of the highlights you find on Youtube.

I don?t intend to make anyone get whiplash for suggesting this, but perhaps the fan voting ought to be hindered slightly or done away with. Let the coaches vote them in, and leave the technologies we’ve been using to vote to be mere polls to see how the fans feel.
