All I Care About In A Browser Is Speed

Now that everyone has wireless high speed connections to the Internet, the performance of your browser is more visible than ever before. With dial up, you couldn’t tell whether the wait was because of the slow connection, the browser, or both. But now the problem, if you have a wait while opening up pages online, is probably traceable right to what browser you are using.

I have used Internet Explorer, Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox and my pattern seems to be that I switch from one to another if the one I’m using becomes slow. Speed is what I’m after and what I expect.

When I began starting to figure out how to make money online, I read a lot about how great Firefox was. It seems to be the overwhelming favorite of Internet marketers because of all the stats you can get and I do appreciate and use some of them. However, when SEOquake is turned on, my surfing speed slows down dramatically. All the bells and whistles that are available for Firefox are great but they come at a cost of a reduction of speed and for me, they are just not worth it.

Once you get used to having truly high speed Internet, it is hard to go back to anything that is slower. Right now, even though I might occasionally be able to get an added benefit from the statistics I can get from Firefox, I still choose the one that is performing the fastest. If one slows down, I switch to another one. Once you know how fast things should be, it is tough to go backwards.

Santa’s Empty Tech Sack

The great thing about tech is that it’s small, sleek and portable.  But this isn’t always a huge advantage as I discovered on spending a Christmas with some friends.  This year had been pretty good to me and for once in my life I was able to lash out a bit on gifts and of course as a tech obsessed Geek I veered heavily toward techie presents.

Have you ever see those old films where someone stumbles up to the front door laden with huge boxes of gifts – well it looks good doesn’t it.  Unfortunately my gifts being of the micro chip variety did not look quite as impressive.

In fact a huge amount of my budget went on an Iphone for the lady of my life and a couple of Ipods for nephews and nieces.  For my uncle and his wife I bought a subscription to a UK based proxy which I’d printed out the details.  Add to this a couple of Xbox and PS3 games and I’d spent quite a bit.  Unfortunately my present pile  was hardly enough to make a bulge in small carrier bag in fact I could have easily held it all in my pocket to be honest.

So just remember all you technical suppliers of super sleek goods, you don’t have to make the packaging that small.  Yes of course, I understand about global warming and using Earths resources but would a bigger box for the Ipod  really do that much more harm than Sting visiting his luxury villas strewn across the world!

If you don’t do this I’m going to have to spoil all your super neat packaging by buying a big cardboard box and placing my gifts in those.  Yes it is completely unneccesary but at least I won’t be asked – ‘didn’t you bother with presents then’ next year !

Firefox and Selling a Wine of the Month Club Online

Firefox is one of those great success stories.  They shouldn’t have ever made it, but they did.  They entered a business (browsers and email programs) which is incredibly competitive both in terms of programming, but also in terms of marketing.

I mean, would you want to compete with Microsoft and Google?

I wouldn’t, but then again my wine of the month club is competing with names like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and even Sunset Magazine.  I guess that doesn’t make for an easy entry point into the market either.

What I take from Firefox and from Mozilla is that through technology small companies have an opportunity to fight against much larger competitors.  That’s what I’m hoping to do.

Fascinating Technology in Your Kitchen Sink!

We all love the technology that is brought to us by cool companies like Mozilla, but what about the technology that is hanging around our household?

I recently had a chance to learn about the technology that powers an under sink water filter, a device I recently purchased to help purify my drinking water.  Here’s what it does:

The filter pulls water from the tap into filtration tanks that each serve their own purpose (e.g., some remove fluoride, others bacteria and cysts, and so on).  They’re typically carbon filters, which means they use activated carbon that absorbs the toxins and doesn’t let them pass through to the filtered water.

The water is then sent back up to your sink, sometimes through a separate faucet and sometimes through your original.  And there you have it — filtered drinking water!

I think the most fascinating part is that what seems like it should be a complicated, technologically advanced system is actually very simple: harnessing the power of activated carbon to remove undesirable compounds.  Who knew something so powerful (purified drinking water) could be achieved using such a simple process?

The Clyde – The First NBA Basketball Shoe

These days is you head into a Footlocker store, great Footlocker coupons in hand looking for a great pair of basketball sneakers you might be forgiven for thinking that almost every NBA star has his own line of sneakers and that they are all for sale right there!

These days that is almost the case. LeBron, Dwayne, Kobe, CP3, Carmelo, Amare, Dwight and many others all have their own signature shoe line. But how many of you know which NBA player was actually the first to ever have a pair of sneakers named after him?

That honor went to Walt “Clyde” Frazier, the flamboyant and very fashionable star of the 1970 and 1971 championship winning New York Knicks team. The shoes were called “Clydes” and they were made by Puma. What is even more interesting though is that they are still popular and production over three decades later, as Walt Clyde is the color commentator for the Knicks TV channel and as far as New Yorkers are concerned still very much in the public eye.

How Mozilla And Eudora Help Manage My Orders For Family Crest Gifts

Although you won’t find any mention of the project on Mozilla’s website, Mozilla is working with Eudora to improve the Thunderbird email programme. The development is called Penelope and the end result is a much enhanced package compared to the bog standard Thunderbird offering. Eudora used to sell its own email programme but now works exclusively with Mozilla and the marriage has been very successful.

I have several shops on the Internet, the main one selling gifts with the customer’s family crest, but others selling personalised bone china – mainly plates to commemorate a baby’s birth, Christening, a wedding anniversary or any other special occasion. When it gets busy I appreciate Thunderbird’s ability to separate out the orders from the various shops. In the run up to Christmas the family crests shop has been particularly busy for understandable reasons and having an ‘intelligent’ email package to handle all the orders has been a real boon. My thanks to both Mozilla and Eudora for their efforts to make this a really good package, and it’s free too!

Maybe we should change our minds.

Look we all know that Napa Valley and Sonoma are relatively close to San Francisco right?  We also know that Silicon Valley is basically part of SF as well right? (it’s actually more of San Jose, but who’s counting really?)

Makes you wonder about the last wine gift baskets set that you bought and how much tech went into that basket doesn’t it? I mean, if someone makes a fortune in high tech are they going to suddenly not care about technology when they retire and buy a winery…..personally I doubt it.

Energy Saving Technology

Technology has lead to pollution and the emission of green house gases. Think of the technology that has made oil exploration possible, or that has made factories with chimney stacks pop up all over the world, and especially in China. Technology has also bee responsible for giving us nuclear energy that when it goes wrong, does so on an unimaginable scale that takes several generations to deal with. When you think of technology in these terms it is easy to become a luddite, to become against technology. Without technology we wouldn’t have missles, oil slicks, nucelar disasters and global warming.

However, there is great potential for technology to be used to benefit both mankind and nature. Technology might be our best chance, other than living a Gandhian life of rustic simplicity, to deal wit the problems of pollution, resource depletion and global warming.

Our homes are a great place to start. We should all use simple technology to make our homes greener places, to reduce our carbon footprint and to better husband precious resources. Here are a few technological suggestions to make the home more environmentally friendly:

1) Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs (also called low energy bulbs). These use 75% less electricity and typically last 13 times longer.

2) Install an energy star approved programmable thermostat such as the Lux Products TX9000TS that can prevent you from over-heating or over-cooling an empty home.

3) Install a low flow shower unit that mixes air with water to maintain water pressure but halve the amount of water used per minute showering.

4) Replace old energy guzlling appliances with modern more energy efficent versions. A new fridge, air-con unit or TV can over a year make big savings.

5) Get a rain water bin to catch rain water coming from the down pipe from the gutters. This water can be used to water the garden

6) Use a composter to turn unwanted food into soil to grow more food.

These are all simple technological suggestions that can make a home more environmentally friendly. If we all used this technology we might not be in such an impasse as we are right now.

Electrical Discharge Machining

One of the breakthroughs in technology that is often not talked about or celebrated very much is that made by electrical discharge machining or EDM. It is technology that developed as a result of the discoveries of Joseph Priestley in 1770. Priestley discovered that there was an erosive effect caused by electrical discharges. In the 1940s two Soviet scientists intent on finding an electrical discharge weapon stumbled on a process for cutting metals and alloys using electrical discharges. From these beginnings EDM technology has developed rapidly. It is now at the forefront of such industries as aerospace, automobile and mold making. Any hard metal or alloy hat has been cut to precise measurements has probably been made using EDM sink erosion or wire erosion.

EDM works by using 2 electrodes. One electrode is called the ’tool’ and the other the ’workpiece’. Between them flows a dielectric fluid. A high voltage is run between the two electrodes. When the distance between the two electrodes is shortened enough then a spark is emitted that removes a few microscopic particles from the workpiece. These particles are flushed away by the constantly moving dielectric fluid. With sinker EDM the tool is above and the workpiece is below. As the tool lowers it makes a hole in the workpiece. With wire erosion the voltage between the two electrodes is sent down a wire usually made of brass.

There are electrical discharges or sparks that go off many times a second to create a cutting action. The tool can be moved on all axis to produce any type of 3D shape in a hard metal or alloy. To keep precision the tool electrode is frequently changed. With wire erosion the wire is continually being drawn between the two electrodes.

By hooking up EDM machines to computers it is possible to make exact copies of digitally designed shapes. This has allowed an accuracy in engineering that was hitherto impossible using trasditional methods of cutting such as milling. Today such things as turbine blades and rocket parts are made using EDM. It is the precision of EDM that has allowed technology to advance so rapidly.

Watching The BBC Abroad Using a Proxy

For anyone in the UK who has to travel a lot, the decision of the BBC to block access to their Iplayer site is very annoying.  I spend about 50% of my working life outside the UK and keeping up with home affairs can be quite difficult.  Unfortunately my travel locations are far from interesting mostly consisting of dull industrial towns and estates which can get quite boring in the evenings.  So the BBC IPlayer sounded like a godsend where I could at least keep up with the news and my favorite documentaries whilst travelling.

I might add that I am a BBC license payer, although I have to say I think the BBC should be broadcast abroad for free as well.  Unfortunately it doesn’t work properly as the BBC block access to the site for anyone who connects using a Non-UK IP address.  So when I connect from the glamour of a business hotel in Lund, Sweden – my IP address is Swedish and so I get blocked.  There’s no way of bypassing this by normal methods so if I played the game according to the bBC I’d have to watch Swedish TV instead.

Fortunately there is a work around by hiding your IP address, you just need to use a BBC IPlayer proxy in order to appear to be in the United Kingdom.   There’s loads of these available which can all let you watch any UK TV station you like.  In fact the same problem is faced by anyone who travels, US surfers get blocked from all their favorite shows when outside the USA.   The same thing happens for Australian, Japanese, Canadian, German and French TV sites – in fact there’s not many that don’t block access to some extent.

Bypassing blocks and filters is becoming part of life on the internet.  Companies are blocking people in order to maximize profits and restrict licensing.  But perhaps more worrying is when governments and security agencies decide on what you can or cannot see online!

The Internet Makes it All Easier

Using the Internet has changed every aspect of our lives for the better. If you frequent the businesses that used to use mountains of paperwork, you understand what I mean.

Case in point, my flat search last year. There was no hassle of any kind compared to my move before of ten years ago. ten years ago I had to search through pages and pages of books to try and see through the paper the flats I would be renting. There was no chance that their homes could be represented on paper. Though still, from what I read, I ended up viewing four flats and closed a deal by that months end. The final paperwork however took a further month to trickle in.

This time our final process was zero hassle, and our search was the best ever. Our broker had all kinds of amazing pictures on their websites. At least 15 pictures per flat made a great impression of each space. They also included a floor plan and compass to show where the sun would shine during days, though they noted that sunny days were, “not guaranteed”.

There is a spot south of Carlisle and north of Penrith that had just the right property to rent for me. It has a pond in the back with fish in. It has an acre of land surrounding the house. And Best of all 13mb/s downstream and 9mb/s upstream. I’m going to be surfing the web in nature. I can’t wait until I get Wifi up and running from solar beacons in the woods around me. boosting my wifi to the edges of my property. But the key is going to be making it sustainable, and being able to make it for a low initial cost. And then engineer into it a way to keep and running costs low. Needless to say technology has added a lot to my todo list.

Firefox and Bamboo

The Firefox browser was first released in 2004. It grew out of the Mozilla project – an open source project – that eventually required a browser to accompany all the applications being developed. At first updates and new versions of the Firefox browser were infrequent, but over time the new versions were rolled out faster and faster. Now it is predicted that there will be an update of the popular browser every 6 weeks.

For many the Firefox browser is much better than Internet Explorer. It is open source and free. It shows websites both old and new in a lot more accurate fashion than IE. It also incorporates security features to stop viruses attacking your computer.

I recently bought an ASUS Bamboo Laptop. To be precise the ASUS U43JC-X1. It has a 14 inch screen, a 4 GB ram and a 500 GB hard drive. It also has an incredible 10 hour battery life. What is best about my bamboo laptop is that the casing is made from bamboo. This cuts down on the use of plastics by 15%. It is thus not only a stylish looking computer but also an environmentally friendly computer.

And naturally when I’m surfing the web on my bamboo computer I am using Firefox. I consider both Firefox and the bamboo laptop to be two of the finest things to come out of the computer age that we live in.

Protect your Information on Holiday

While on holiday in Koh Samui last year I had something unfortunate happen to me. I went to an internet cafe in Bang Rak on the north coast of the island to check my email and do some other catching up. The computer I used was a very old PC. I think it had a very early version of internet explorer installed because several of the sites I visited looked odd on the screen.

I logged into a number of my accounts, did some further browsing and then had a look at Facebook. Nothing special at the time. However, when I got home and logged into my email I noticed that my inbox was flooded with spammy messages. Worse still my Facebook account had been hijacked and several bogus invites had been sent out under my name. I had been badly hacked, and my personal information jeopardized. It took me a good few hours to change passwords etc.

Looking back on it, I’m sure it was my hour in an internet cafe in Bang Rak that had been the cause of the problem.

Since then I never login to my accounts on personal computers. Instead I travel with my own small laptop. This is getting much easier because wifi connections are available in more and more places. Now in Thailand most mid-range hotels and resorts have wifi. It is the best solution since you can control the security on your own computer but not on public computers.

How the Many Ways for All-Star Voting Tamper the Game

Call me a homer here, but I think you would find it hard to not see how Luol Deng should be an All-Star this year. He is one of the most consistent players in the league, and definitely seems to be the Chicago Bulls second best player. But the All-Star voting returns show that he is behind LeBron, Chris Bosh, the ailing and aging Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and even his own teammate in Carlos Boozer.

The fan voting can be done in many ways, from logging on to the website or onto a mobile app to texting the player’s names. But you are able to vote once a day, meaning you can vote for the same guys each day. The fans of the game do not recognize anything outside of the highlights you find on Youtube.

I don?t intend to make anyone get whiplash for suggesting this, but perhaps the fan voting ought to be hindered slightly or done away with. Let the coaches vote them in, and leave the technologies we’ve been using to vote to be mere polls to see how the fans feel.
